Here’s a quick look at an animated short I’ve been helping out on. Cauldron Bubbles is a student project from some of the talented people in the UT Dallas ATEC program. I’ve been working with Eddie Taylor and his team for a while now as they finish up the animation and start putting together all of the lighting and composition. This little bit looks fantastic, but it’s barely a glimpse at the awesome work these guys have been putting in. It should be quite a treat and it’s been an honor and a joy to be a part of this project. You can watch a teaser here.
Around late 2010, some friends of mine started an independent game project as part of our graduate studies at UT Dallas. Initially it was going to be something of a MOBA. As time went on, the idea morphed and eventually became a multiplayer hero-based tower defense game. I’ve been working on this project as its sound designer since its inception and it’s been a lot of fun. Trying to solve some interesting problems that arise when you’re working with the free version of UDK and trying to make an isometric game rather than an FPS has been a great experience regardless of how frustrating it can be.
The game has changes somewhat and I the general scope has been trimmed down some since the Kickstarter campaign didn’t make its funding goals. So what you see in this video may not be a indicative of the final game, but it has a pretty good amount of the sound design I put into the current incarnation.
Last semester I helped out on a short called “Cabin Fever.” It’s a fun little parody of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” If you like pirates and goofy videos, you should go watch it.
I’ve put up my old demo reel in the portfolio section. Man, that thing’s kind of old even after a year. I’m still working on updating it to reflect the work I did on games like Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines. I’ve also done some more work on game vertical slices for my graduate studies, and none of that’s in there. What a shame. Anyway, maybe check it out?
I’ve finally gotten on this bandwagon called “The Internet.” This site’s primarily designed to be a place to show off my work and hopefully somewhere I can post what I’m learning about sound design. I’m keen on this idea of posting tutorials for things like working with audio in the UDK.
There really aren’t a lot of places out there with good documentation from someone who’s been working in it. I recently found a post by someone relatively new to Unreal. It essentially read like the blind leading the blind. That’s not meant as a knock against the author. The UDK isn’t the most intuitive software and the amount of residual deprecated features and magic check boxes make for a steep learning curve. I’m no expert, but I’ve been working in Unreal as a sound designer for a little over three years now. I think I can at least gives some tips on how to get started. So that’s that. I should be posting some of the work I’ve been doing in the next week or two.
